Music of the Labor Movement
In this talk, I highlight the intersectionality of the labor protest movement, specifically in its use of music. I argue that labor protest music has borrowed the resistant rhetoric of Black and Brown protest movements, but that their contributions have been erased from the canon. We need to uncover the contributions of intersectional people in past and modern-day labor protest music.
About Rebekah
Rebekah Mangels is a Graduate Instructor at Illinois State University. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Music and Communication from Wheaton College. Graduating in May with a Master’s in Communication at ISU, Rebekah is a passionate activist in her labor union and the pro-Palestinian movement. She is excited to share her knowledge of labor protest music, the topic of her current thesis. She hopes to continue her work in music, communication, and advocacy as she enters the workforce.
