The Power of LGBTQ+ Allyship for Mental Health Care
“Mental health care in the US for LGBTQ+ folks is struggling. LGBTQ+ adults in the United States are 2x as likely to experience a mental health condition. Referrals for mental health counseling are up; 42% of LGBTQ+ youth this last year said they wanted counseling and weren’t able to access it. Social support – or informal support outside of the therapy room – is more important now than ever. LGBTQ+ youth who experience positive support within the home are 2-3x less likely to experience suicidal ideation and less likely to later make a suicide attempt. Allies matter now more than ever.
