Talk Summary: How to think, transform, and thrive in the future
Why do we do this? It’s because our educational system primarily focuses on structured communication like language, which has an associated grammar, ignoring the visual arts that are mostly unstructured. Two-thirds of humans are visual learners, but instead of developing our innate ability to model and process visual information, we ignore it. Organizing information linearly such as in sentences has its limits. We can extend that limit by organizing information in two dimensions, such as through visuals.
As the world gets inundated with data, technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) is enabling computers to process large volumes of data in faster and smarter ways. We are teaching computers to process data from multiple sources, build models, and make decisions based on those models, such as what an autonomous car does. Yet, AI cannot think creatively to solve significant problems, a skill that humans excel at.
Imagine a future where computers do what they are good, and humans do what they are good at – complementing each other to solve the world’s toughest challenges. To make that vision a reality, we need to go back and build upon our childhood abilities to express thoughts through visuals. Before we learned how to write, we drew. Expressing thoughts through drawing could be the equivalent of writing thousands of words. To better understand the complexities of the world around us and to thrive in the future world of advanced technologies, it’s time we all start to doodle.
