Home Sam Cullinane

Brief Professional Bio

Sam Cullinane has been married to her husband Patrick for twenty-three years but in their tenth year of marriage, they filed for divorce. After a year apart, against all odds, they decided to get back together and for the last thirteen years they’ve been avid students of relationships. In 2017 Sam and her husband released a book (Bigger Love) based on their experiences. However, Sam became very interested in what science had to say about it all. At the end of 2019 they will rerelease the book but this time it contains all of the scientific evidence that backs up their advice. This revised book is entitled Marriage: From Miserable to Magnificent – How to Have the
Love of Your Life for the Rest of Your Life. Sam and her husband host a podcast called ‘The Not-So Perfect Couple’ and Sam is also working on her next book about sex in long-term relationships. Her life mission is to help people enjoy happier, more fulfilling, and longer lasting romantic relationships.

Sam serves as the CFO of Zipi, Inc, a software development company in the real estate industry. She is also an author, podcast host, and President of a women’s mastermind, Symmetry7.

Talk Summary: A Case to Put Out

What do you do when your partner wants to have sex but you don’t feel like it? Or vice-a-versa? This extremely common problem of mismatched libidos is also fairly serious. If it isn’t addressed it can and does lead to sexual and relationship dissatisfaction, break-ups, and divorce. Most of us make the decision about whether or not to have sex based on how we feel and/or what our genitals are doing. However, this may not actually be the most prudent criteria to make this decision. In fact, if we were to use science to help us make this decision – just like we do in all other areas of our lives like our work, exercise, and nutrition – you would use a completely different set of criteria to make this decision for the betterment of your health, well-being, and of course for your relationship.

What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxNormal, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxNormal event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
